Rivers of Living Water

Rivers of Living Water & Discerning Truth

I was exhausted today after some study and meditating on His Word(s) and usually I will take a nap, and usually He will give me more.

He had me thinking about the phrase 'Rivers of Living Water".  This is how Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit in the book of John.

John 7:37-39  "On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.  Now this He said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

You see Jesus was speaking about the Spirit of God, who was in Him and once He ascended to His Father - would be available to all who would receive Him.

There are many spirits but only One True Holy Spirit.

In John 14:16- 31 when Jesus is comforting His disciples, we hear Him speak about the Holy Spirit:

"And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him; but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you and shall be in you.

These things I have spoken to you, being yet present with you.  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall tech you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to unto you.  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  I go away, and come again unto you.  If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father:  for my Father is greater than I.  And now I have told you before it comes to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.  Hereafter I will not talk much with you:  for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.  But that the world may know that I love the Father; as as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.  Arise, let us go hence."

God had me thinking of where we get water.  Most of us simply go to a faucet and turn the knob and out flows the water.  We get it from our garden hoses, our own wells, we buy it from the grocery store in plastic bottles.  We rarely get it directly from the source.  Thats how it is with many today when it comes to their Christian walk, their Christian lives.  Few have a direct relationship and communication with the One True Living God, through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.  They receive their water through other vessels, sometimes other sources, foreign sources.

Just as it is with drinking water, the water we bathe ourselves with, the water we use to clean, to add to recipes, to mix things with - we have no idea of the source and even when we do we have no idea of the integrity of the vessel from which it is carried and flows through.  Even if we get it from a well that has been on our property for generations, we never truly know if it has been breached and poisoned until its to late.  Thats what I see today, so many levels of deception and so many detours away from the pure, unadulterated truth.

If I put a few drops of cyanide in your drinking water every day for the next several months, eventually you would die.  We must test the purity of what we are seeing, hearing and consuming, body. mind and spirit.

Romans 8:12-17  "So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh to living according to the flesh - for it you are living according to the flesh you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live.  For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.  For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him that we may indeed be glorified with Him."

The Holy Spirit within us will witness to Truth

"For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God."  1 Corinthians 2:10

The things that God wants to reveal to us have been and will be revealed to us through His Spirit within us.  These things have been written down for us to read and understand.  Jesus, on the night of His betrayal, promised His apostles that He would send the Holy Spirit to them as we have just read in John 14:16-31.  The Spirit will guide us into all truth and bring these things to our remembrance, clearly and unerringly.  Unlike men and women, who they themselves fail to rely on the Spirit of God within to discern the truth, who profess to be the mouthpieces and voices of God.  These people, if you follow them blindly without testing the spirits, will lead you astray.  The enemy will find every possibly way to pervert God's truth and he does it through this very thing.

It is the Holy Spirit of God that reveals the mind of God to us.  We need have His Word in our minds and learn not to "exceed" or "go beyond" what has been written.

"Therefore judge nothing before the proper time; wait until the Lord comes.  He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts.  At that time each will receive his praise from God.  Brothers I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us not to go beyond what is written.  Then you will not take pride on one man over another.  For who makes you so superior?  What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you did receive it, why do yo boast as though you did not?"  1 Corinthians 4:5-7

He wants clean, strong, willing and able vessels to reveal the through Truth through.  He wants transparent and yielded vessels to carry the Rivers of Living water to a dry and parched land!

There is only One who will always give you the Truth, anything else is a lie.  My mom always taught me that if you only shared part of the truth the whole thing was a lie.  She was right!  The only way to get the whole Truth is to have a relationship (i.e. direct communication with) with the One who is Truth!
