I am going to be posting a series of educational and biblically sound teachings on this topic because I feel it is important to the body of believers who want to know the truth. There is a growing number of people who "practice" speaking in tongues (i.e. unintelligible sounds and syllables - not a true known phonetic earthly language known to man). The bible is very clear on the gift of tongues or languages as correctly translated into modern day english. This gift was given on the day of Pentecost for the sole purpose of making the gospel available to foreign speaking people. Today most of what we hear among those who "practice" this is not of God and is not supported scripturally. It is a gift that cannot be learned or taught but is given by the Holy Spirit as He wishes. There are many false doctrines that go along with this teaching which has included the idea that you have not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit unless you also have the gift of speaking in "Tongues". The true gift of tongues or the ability to speak in a known language not previously known or learned by the one speaking is for the edification of the body of Christ, not of one's self and therefore that is why God has said if one or two but no more than three speak in "tongues" let them do it in order and let another interpret, however if there is no interpreter then one must keep silent. Additionally, some will say that God has given them the gift of "tongues" as a special or secret prayer language, this is also NOT biblically supported. I encourage you to study this topic in depth to make your own conclusions, allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal all Truth on this subject. Today many promote this modern day counterfeit and its a mockery to God. Likewise, as Paul stated in the scripture, those who do this without an interpretation edify themselves and make themselves along with the church look like fools. The gift of "Tongues" or the ability to speak in another language they didn't know previously is a sign for the unbelievers and not the believers. And finally, any gift has not value if we do not have love for one another.
